Microsoft has announced its first Windows 11 preview build today. Windows Insiders can choose to download the Windows 11 preview ( build 22000.51) now. The preview can access the new Start menu and multitasking features along with an updated Microsoft Store. In contrast to the previous Windows 11 leak, this official preview comes with an updated File Explorer that replaces the ribbon with a command bar that will simplify the management of files a bit more.
The preview will feature most of the visual improvements to Windows 11 that Microsoft announced in the last week. The new build comes with the Start menu, an interface that resembles a launcher and has round corners across. There are also improvements to the notification center and volume flyouts as well as other areas. If your computer is equipped with an accelerometer, it will be able to detect motion. Windows 11 lock screen will come with a parallax effect.
This preview also includes Windows 11's brand new themes, including dark and light modes, improvements, and the brand-new Widgets feature. All the new themes -- Glow, Captured Motion, Sunrise, and Flow -- were designed with the centered taskbar in mind, and Microsoft has coupled these themes with new music available in Windows 11 as you use the OS.
However, two major Windows 11 features are missing: Microsoft Teams integration (and Android apps on Windows) Both are being developed and tested by Microsoft; however, they will be available in the upcoming preview builds.
This Windows 11 preview also includes Microsoft's brand new Snap Groups and Snap Layouts, which are designed to increase multitasking across various sizes. These new Snap features leverage a lot of the multitasking functions that have been on Windows for a while but allow them to be more easily discovered and more efficient -- particularly in multiple-monitor situations.
Microsoft is also updating the Settings section in Windows 11. The preview build comes with changes that allow users to find the settings they need. The Settings panel now features a left-hand navigation panel that persists throughout the entire website. This makes it easier to navigate between sections. Microsoft has also added the new "heroes" controls to the top of Settings. They give quick access to settings and options for each team.
